A stunning Grand Tour-era tazza featuring a hand-painted églomisé (reverse-painted glass) pastoral scene at its center. The tazza features chimera , and many acanthus-like rocaille. The delicate landscape captures idyllic country life in rich, luminous colors, beautifully framed by the tazza’s elegant classical form. Cows are seen in the foreground and a castle at the back. A remarkable decorative piece that embodies the sophistication and artistry collected by 19th-century travelers on their European tours — perfect for adding old-world charm to a console, mantel, or curated display.
About Grand Tour Items:
In the 18th and 19th centuries, young European aristocrats and affluent travelers embarked on the Grand Tour—an extended journey through cultural centers like Italy, France, and Greece. Along the way, they collected art, antiquities, and finely crafted souvenirs such as sculptures, tazzas, micromosaics, and églomisé pieces. These treasures served both as mementos of their travels and as symbols of education, taste, and status back home.
About Églomisé:
Églomisé refers to the art of reverse painting on glass, often combined with gilding, to create luminous, jewel-like images. Named after 18th-century French decorator Jean-Baptiste Glomy, this technique has roots dating back to ancient Rome and was revived in Europe for decorative panels, mirrors, and small treasures like Grand Tour souvenirs.
