A 19th-century reproduction of Gilbert Stuart Newton’s famous 1826 painting, Captain Macheath Upbraided by Polly and Lucy in The Beggar’s Opera. Beautifully detailed and rich in historical drama, this piece captures a pivotal moment from John Gay’s celebrated play, making it a refined and theatrical addition to any collection. On verso, there is a sketched scene of what looks like a proposal. Two stamps on the back as noted, one from London and the other from New York. Signed “C. Hitchcock NY”.

Dimensions: 29.75”W x 24.75”H
Condition: There is significant wear to the canvas, including some holes as noted. Craquelure and tarnish. Stretcher is aged. Not ready to hang.

What is a condition report?

A condition report is a detailed description of an antique item’s current state. It notes any visible signs of age, wear, repairs or imperfections — such as scratches, chips, fading or patina — that reflect the piece’s history. In combination with the photos provided, condition reports are meant to provide full transparency, allowing you to understand not just the beauty of an item, but also its journey through time.

At Gathered in the Palms, we try to provide honest and thoughtful condition reports to ensure you know exactly what to expect, so you can welcome each piece into your home with confidence. If you need more pictures and video of the item before purchasing, please do not hesitate to contact us. It is the responsibility of the buyer to ask questions prior to purchase.
